The Church & Snuff

In the mid 1600’s there were some that objected to snuff taking and that included the Catholic Church. Pope Urban VIII threatened to ex-communicate anyone who indulged in the use of snuff and Tsar Michael of Russia took it even farther by invoking a hefty penalty for anyone found using snuff. That penalty was the removal of the offending person’s nose! Even though some did reject the use of snuff, it flourished in other parts of the world which included the French King, Louis XIII and his court.
