America was the largest producer of tobacco for export in the known world back then. It had been cultivated since the late 1600’s and transported by the Dutch to Northern Europe thru New Amsterdam, now modern day New York City. Snuff taking spread to the colonies from Europe as more people immigrated. Snuff image as a aristocratic luxury was so prevalent in America that in 1794, a federal tax was created around it. Just as it was in Europe at the time, snuff taking was the preferred way for the well to do and powerful in America to enjoy tobacco. |
